Independent Living Technology Showcase For Vision Impaired People Taking Place In Great Yarmouth

A special event showcasing technology which allows people living with sight loss to live independently in their own homes is taking place in Great Yarmouth next week.

Norfolk’s sight loss charity Vision Norfolk has partnered with Reedham-based Cobolt Systems, which specialises in the design and manufacture of innovative aids for vision impaired people, for the event, which takes place on Wednesday 9th July at Vision Norfolk’s Great Yarmouth hub on Hall Quay.

The exhibition will showcase a wide range of household daily living aids, from talking air fryers, microwaves and kitchen scales to video magnifiers, talking wristwatches to talking central heating remote controllers.  The company even offers innovative products such as a talking colour detector and a banknote identifier.

“The ability to live independently in their own home is the number one priority for so many people living with sight loss,” said Vision Norfolk’s Great Yarmouth hub co-ordinator Ed Bates, who is himself blind.

“Today there is so much technology to help vision impaired people do just that, and we are fortunate to have one of the leading providers of such items here in Norfolk.  Cobolt Systems have a reputation for innovation – for example, they designed the world’s first talking kitchen scales, talking microwave oven and talking tape measure.

“We are looking forward to the chance to see their latest innovations at this exciting free event, and we hope that anyone living with sight loss, or who has a family member who is vision impaired, will take the opportunity to come and find out how technology can really enhance lives and allow independent living.”

The Vision Norfolk/Cobolt Systems Technology Showcase takes place at Vision Norfolk’s Great Yarmouth hub at 12 Hall Quay on Wednesday 9th July from 10am-12pm.  Admission is free, and there is no need to reserve in advance – just run up on the day.
