Leading Norfolk Distillery Hosts Special Sensory Tour For Vision Impaired Visitors

A group vision impaired people had the chance to flex some of their other senses when they were treated to a special sensory tour and tasting at Black Shuck Distillery in Hindolveston.

The party, all from the Norwich area, were given a hands-on touch-and-feel tour of the distillery, before tasting their way through the firm’s range of gins, schnapps and liqueurs.

The trip was organised by Vision Norfolk as part of its ongoing programme of social and leisure activities aimed at tackling the social isolation which sight loss can cause.

As well as tasting the finished product, the group were able to taste and smell a range of the botanicals and aromatics which are used in the making of Black Shuck’s range of drinks, and they also appreciated the raised embossing on the bottles and labels which help vision impaired people identify the firm’s products.

“The special tour which was laid on by Black Shuck gave our party a real opportunity to get to grips with how distilled drinks are made, from sticking their noses into the botanicals to feeling their way right across the complex still,” said Richard Polley, co-ordinator at Vision Norfolk’s Norwich hub.

“Our programme of social and leisure activities is designed to enable those living with sight loss to get out and enjoy what our county has to offer, as well as creating a vibrant social scene for people who might otherwise find themselves isolated.”
