Reading Group Discussing Book

Vision Norfolk audio book clubs go virtual

For the past 15 years, Vision Norfolk has played host to regular audio book clubs across Norfolk. These book clubs have provided an opportunity for visually impaired book lovers to get together to discuss the book of the month. But more than that, it has been a means for people to connect with one another which has been paramount during the Coronavirus outbreak.

Members have been continuing to come together each month, now, via Zoom. Prior to each meeting, each person is supplied with a local call number and meeting PIN code which once entered on a phone, connects them to a local club. Books are supplied on either a USB memory stick or a MP3 CD from the National Calibre Audio Library after each book club, in preparation for the following month.

The new virtual book clubs have proved a big hit among its members, with Margaret, a member from our Norwich book club, commenting that “it is nice to speak to the other members of the group and find out how they are doing at this difficult time. It makes you feel that things can still continue even though you can’t meet up in person.”

Mary and Gladys, from our Fakenham book club enjoyed July’s book, Air and Angel by Susan Hill. “What an interesting and gripping read, and what intriguing twists and turns there were in the book.”

The book clubs take place in Fakenham, Cromer, Dereham, Norwich, Thetford and Diss, usually in the local library but will continue over Zoom for the foreseeable future.

We would love to welcome some new members to the book club, so if you are interested in trying it or have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact Mark Smith on [email protected] or phone 01603 973216.
